I recently got sent an email that talked about an experiment a school student undertook with a microwave. They went and bought 2 identical growing plants from the shop, watered one with fresh water from the tap, and watered one with water that they’d heated in the microwave and allowed to cool down. As the story goes, the water from the tap plant thrived, the other plant died.
So, in light of this and some other information I have come across I have decided to go ‘old school’ and as such have taken our microwave out of our kitchen. I’m doing a 3 month trial to see how we can cope without this 20th Century gadget.
Admittedly, (and I think you would agree) it does come in very handy. I work from home, so lunch is often left over greens and dinner from the night before…how else do you heat this? (I’ve since learned to put the whole meal into some foil in the top of a bamboo steamer- not sure what I’d do if I worked in a office!). And in the mornings, we are often in a hurry so I make brown rice porridge in the microwave and add berries, yoghurt and nuts. Healthy but am I killing those very nutrients I seek to obtain their goodness? And really, I could do all of this on the stove. Yes it takes a little longer, yes there is a little more mess to clean up (a saucepan!) but our grand-parents used to exist for many years without one and they survived. Dinner was kept in the oven with foil for those late home from work – yes, it may have dried out a bit, but there was a real sense of ‘occasion’. People tried harder to get home on time for dinner, and then sat down when it was ready ‘as a family’, and didn’t eat heated meals up in front of the tv or in a plastic take-away containers. My mum tells me that when they used to get take-away, they used to take their saucepan down to the local Chinese restaurant! Apart from the fact we live in a highly litigious society, I’m not so sure that this isn’t a good idea to return to!But have we got too used to the modern conveniences of life? Have we forgotten that many of our ailments and diseases weren’t around ‘back in the day’. Can we ever go back to the way it was?
Well, I’m trying…for 3 months, so far it’s been 3 weeks and I can count on 1 hand the number of times I’ve thought “I could just zap that” only to realise I have to work something else out. And the other benefit? Moving this off the kitchen bench, means more space for other delightful appliances, such as my juicer and blender…more green smoothies and fresh juices for me!
